[BLUG] How to relieve stress

Mark:

You are correct. I worked for Be, Inc. I even wrote a few newsletter
articles for them during that time.

I worked for them between late 1997 up until they no longer had a
development staff in late 2001. Release-wise this was from the time PR2
went golden (the second release available for PPC-based Macs/clones)
through the Intel days to the last days as an Internet Appliance
operating system.

I really liked BeOS. BeOS had a balance between being easy to use and
having a relatively POSIX underbelly (complete with BASH) that was a
real breath of fresh air in its day.

At one time Apple was looking in to buying BeOS for their "next
generation Mac OS". Of course, they went with Steve Jobs' NeXT operating
system instead.

In the end it was anti-competitive practices by Microsoft that finally
killed Be. (Microsoft violated NDAs and prevented products from
shipping.)

The promises offered by Be's products, of multiprocessors for desktop
computing, products easy for novices, quality underpinnings and standard
interfaces, and free development environments for the masses are now
realized for many more people. These are seen in Mac OS X, and as Linux
becomes easier for the novice it becomes realized there as well.

I'm still a little bitter about how it all went down.

Cheers,
Steven Black
