[BLUG] Teacher Workstation Video Resolution Issue

Esteemed Bluggers, lend me your eyes.

I am having a problem with the new Edubuntu image that I can't quite
figure out.

For all of the teacher workstations, and only the teacher workstations,
the Gnome Desktop Environment comes up in a much lower resolution
(640x400, I believe) than the standard 1024x768 resolution that all the
student workstations come up in.

The only difference is that the teacher workstation's video output goes
through a Splitter cable to both their lcd monitor and to the wall (and
through the wall to the overhead-mounted video projector.

Somehow, during start-up, Edubuntu decides that because of this it needs
to lock itself into a lower resolution; as you might imagine, this is
not acceptable because when a teacher wants to demonstrate something
through the overhead video projector the screen real-estate is
incredibly limited.

I've managed to fool the workstation into starting up in normal 1024x768
resolution by unplugging the cable that goes to the wall during the
start-up process and waiting for the Gnome Desktop Environment to
already be up and running before plugging it back in. Again, as you
might imagine, this is not an acceptable permanent solution for the
teachers to be crawling under the desk every time they turn their
workstation on.

What I need to know, I guess, is:

Is there any way to force the X Server to start up in 1024x768
resolution regardless of what the video card's sensors might be telling
it is the ideal setting?
