It doesn't have to be an external one but it's better be a 'real' one;
i.e., the so-called win-modem does not have all guts a 'real' modem has.
It relies on some software (thus your CPU cycle) to do part of the job
in a full blown modem.  And sadly to say that this software is generally
not available on the Linux side.  But you should be able to find an internal
(full blown) modem for a little less money than an external one.
